What Does a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Do?

A medical billing and coding specialist turns patient visits into clean insurance claims: assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes from the provider's documentation, entering charges, submitting claims, posting payments and working denials until the account is paid.

It is the combined role small physician practices, specialty groups and billing companies hire most, and most specialists hold a certificate plus a credential such as the AAPC CPC or CPB, NHA CBCS or AHIMA CCA.

Many jobs are remote or hybrid.
