A prior authorization specialist gets insurer approval before scheduled procedures, imaging, infusions, specialty drugs or referrals: checking whether authorization is required, submitting clinical information on payer portals, following up and tracking approvals and denials so care is not delayed or unpaid.
They work in specialty practices, hospitals, infusion and imaging centers and home health, often remotely, and are usually trained on the job.
