An inpatient coder codes hospital inpatient stays: ICD-10-CM diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS procedures that group into an MS-DRG or APR-DRG and drive the hospital's payment.
Inpatient coding is the most complex facility coding, so employers usually ask for the AHIMA CCS or RHIT and prior acute-care experience.
Inpatient coders work for hospitals, health systems and coding vendors, very often remotely, and work closely with CDI specialists.
