An outpatient coder codes hospital outpatient and ambulatory facility encounters such as observation stays, clinic visits, infusions, imaging and ancillary tests, applying ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS and the APC rules that set facility payment.
Outpatient facility coders usually hold the AHIMA CCS or AAPC COC and work for hospitals, health systems and coding vendors, often remotely.
