A surgery coder (surgical or operative coder) reads operative notes and codes surgical procedures with CPT and ICD-10 codes, modifiers and global-period rules, for surgeons, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and hospital outpatient surgery.
Surgical coding needs strong anatomy and op-note skills, and specialty coders (orthopedics, cardiology, interventional radiology, GI) are among the most experienced in the field.
