An emergency department coder codes ED visits: the facility E/M level, procedures, injections and infusions on the hospital side, and/or the emergency physician's professional services.
ED coding is high-volume work with strict productivity targets, so it is a common first job for newly certified coders at hospitals, ED physician groups and coding vendors.
